Süddeutsche Zeitung

I have no idea why this photograph is on the front page of a German newspaper, but I love the image. It’s evocative. It reminds me of the wars. Making the landscape desolate. Politicians and generals ordering the common man to fight to the death. It’s a dreary scene. There is no life here, only death. There’s a crooked cross on the lower right. Is it a cemetery? Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. Maybe it’s just winter. I don’t know German so it’s difficult to figure out the context, unless I devote more time than I’d like to it.

  1. I believe it’s the ruins of an old abby. This one’s in one of my art books at home… yes, beautiful and haunting.

  2. The caption under the picture is about the restauration (right=restored) of a painting of Caspar David Friedrich. He is renown for his sometimes rather desolate looking landscapes.
