Absolutely number one is never say “yes” to the first offer. Number two is don’t name a number first. If you do those two things, I see that approximately 90 percent of the wage gap between men and women disappears. Do not name a number first. Don’t do it.

Reading a feminist’s conversation with a reporter led me to some good advice the other day. Sure, it’s for the ladies, but the principles apply to everyone. Everyone can benefit from it.

I think most folks are underpaid and overworked. Perhaps the idea of negotiating your salary will help. They certainly don’t teach this in high school. But they should.
