The ‘Burdens’ of Free Speech
“The best recourse to speech with which we disagree is more speech: Speech that clearly articulates a stronger and better argued point of view.” — an interim university chancellor, in a message to students after pro-Trump chalk graffiti was discovered on campus
Thank heaven some college administrators recognize the First Amendment. This cannot be reiterated enough, particularly on college campuses, where the thought police often hold powerful, influential positions.
Every college student and staffer needs to get this drilled into their heads: The best recourse to something with which we disagree isn’t censorship. Instead, it’s a well-argued rebuttal. Free speech zones and speech codes be damned.
Thank God for the First Amendment and the wisdom of the Founding Fathers.
