There’s nothing like a good Nazi flick!

There's nothing like a good Nazi flick!

Karl Malden
& Marlon Brando
or Hitler & friends?

Before the History Channel, Nazi junkies had to rely on only the few local sympathetic cinema folk in big Midwest cities like Chicago.

What follows is a conversation between friends one cool fall day in the Sixties before heading out to the local cinema.

“Wanna catch a movie?”

“What do you prefer? Karl Malden and Marlon Brando or Hitler and his henchmen?”

I’d love to see a comparison of the box office tallies.

If only it were real.

It’s fifty-plus years on, and I still haven’t seen One-Eyed Jacks. I think it’s out of copyright, too.

I just learned that Universal, The Film Foundation, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese recently worked on restoring the film, using the the original thirty-five millimeter VistaVision negatives. The restoration premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in the south of France, making it one of the few good reasons to attend. But, alas, I didn’t.

One-Eyed Jacks is one of my favorite Westerns,” Spielberg says.
