Can you imagine being a 19th century farmer in this kind of weather?! That’s precisely what my great grandpa did.

He had a farm near South Shore, South Dakota in Mazeppa Township.

The family home was nice, from the photos I have seen of what was left in the 1980s. Two stories. But no insulation. No indoor plumbing. Probably just one woodstove to keep warm.

Even the farmhouse where my father grew up, near Erwin, lacked the same. Thank God for the modern world.
