Free verse about Grandpa

A free verse poem about Grandpa

grandpa_blues

a brief biography of Grandpa Hill

THERE WAS
a farmer

BORN IN 1918
the year of the Great War
— in Europe
AND the deadly influenza epidemic
another global catastrophe

INTO THIS CHAOS
he was born
his father a farmer
descended from a long line of them
always with their hands in the dirt

ALSO A HUNTER
hunting
pheasants
and deer
and raccoons
yes, raccoons

AN ODD TRADITION
passed down
from his mother’s family

THE CONNERS
hillbillies from Virginia
the Shenandoah Valley
in the foothills
of the mountains
I think

BUT HIS LOVE
was playing ball
he was a talented ball player

AND BACK THEN
before Major League Baseball
became popular
through television
there were numerous teams & leagues

EVEN IN SOUTH DAKOTA
cold & dreary South Dakota
oh! the winters

BASICALLY A SHARECROPPER
toiling night & day
finding relief & happiness
in playing ball
well into his fifties

The painting of Grandpa Hill I did in a watercolor class offered by Path with Art. We meet at the Frye Art Museum, one of my favorite places in Seattle and a terrific place for art classes. The museum is always free. Check it out. Some wonderful art there. An amazing collection.
